The dream employee test: a filter for every AI decision in your business.

“What can AI do?” is the wrong question, and it produces the wrong projects. It leads owners to demos, gimmicks, and tools in search of a problem. The right question is older than the technology: if I could hire the best employee I’ve ever had, what would I hand them first?

That framing changes everything, because you already know how to think about employees. You know what you’d delegate and what you’d keep. You know what needs your judgment and what needs your standard. You’ve just never had a hire who could absorb your entire business, never forget a detail, and never leave.

Running the test

Take your week and sort every recurring task into three piles:

• Hand it off entirely: work a great employee could own with a one-page brief. The monthly report. The follow-up emails. The onboarding packet.
• Hand off the draft, keep the signature: work where the writing is delegable but the judgment isn’t. Proposals. Difficult letters. Anything with numbers.
• Keep it: the calls only you can make, the relationships only you hold, the decisions that are actually the job.

Piles one and two are the system’s job description. Pile three is what the recovered hours are for, and the honest reason to do any of this.

Where the analogy is better than the real thing

A real dream employee takes months to find, months to train, and leaves with everything you taught them. The system version trains in about 30 days, holds onto every rule you approved and every fact you loaded, and the training compounds instead of walking out the door. It is also built to hold the same standard every week, which matters more than owners expect, because recurring work fails on the off weeks.

What the analogy correctly preserves: standards. You’d never let a new hire send client work unreviewed in week one. Same here: rules first, then capabilities, and you sign what matters. Run the test on your own week, then pick the first thing to hand off.
